Hurricane Ike Relief Teams
In September and October 2009, The Rock of Gainesville sent 3 teams to the devistated Texas gulf coast. The teams worked with Compassion Alliance and other groups helping with disaster relief and clean up.
I witnessed something pretty cool yesterday afternoon.
My aunt's yard was full of tree limbs following the storm, so after i finished my yard yesterday morning, i headed over to her house to get started over there.
I had worked for about two hours when i decided to take a break. i was sitting on her front steps enjoying a cold beverage when this caravan of vehicles pulls up to aunt sissy's house. this one guy says out of the window of his truck, "hey, need some help?" i looked up and down the street at this caravan wondering what the hell this was all about when he says, "it's no charge, brother."
Before i knew it, 23 guys had leaped out of these vehicles with chainsaws abuzzing working like an army of ants. they finished in less than 30 minutes what would have taken me the entire rest of the day to finish, if not more.
Kudos to "the rock," a group of christian volunteers from a church group in gainesville, florida, who drove all the way over here with this army of guys and an arsenal of tools with the express intention of spending a week or two over here helping out anyone and everyone who needed their help cleaning up from the storm.
I sat there and just watched in amazement while all of this happened. after they finished, we all gathered as a group for a few photos, then as quickly as they came, they were back in their caravan and headed down the street. they stopped at the end of the block, and before you could say "hurricane ike," the chainsaws were buzzing again in someone else's yard.
There's still good people in this world. i was truly touched by these guys and this whole happening.

This was the first time I have ever been a recipient of so many helping hands. I have worked with other in the past and helped others that needed it and have wondered if they really appreciated it. I can not speak for those but I can say that I am very grateful to have received the help this weekend October 18, 2009. All I can think about was when Jesus healed the ten with leprosy how it was only one that gave thanks. I would like to be like that one that did give thanks. You all are an encouragement to show God’s love through what we can do to help others. We were the ones with the two big trees laying in the yard at 2125 Primrose St., Beaumont, TX. It always is amazing how God put thing in place and supplies us with whatever we need.

I just read a posting on a hunting forum about a group of guys from your church who is down here in Texas helping out. I was touched by your kindness and genorosity. What a blessing you are to mankind and what a wonderful servant you are to our Lord, Jesus Christ.

As we are settling in our new home (FEMA trailer), we reflect back on everyone that has crossed our paths and helped us in one way or the other. We couldn’t be here on our property without the help of your team. Ya’ll did more in one day than anybody could have hoped for. I am glad that you did this one last job before you left. Just do me one last favor, remember us as the couple that really appreciated what you did for people like us and not as the “worst” clean up you had done. We thank God for every one of you – we really could not be here without yours and God’s help.
Thanks,
~John and Shelia
